Smiley's Dream Book does not have that lasting charm. It is a confusing read with an anti-climactic ending. Yes, birds are a wonderful motif for a children's book but the way they were used as counting devices lacked clarity and continuity.

The ending is the worst kind of trope/cliche -- an overused device that brought the story to a skidding halt/5(25). The book has a cute story, told mostly via pictures, where the birds get attacked by a hawk and Smiley saves the day.
